United Way Helps Start Up Shelter

The Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs will open a family shelter to alleviate stress and danger for homeless families.

“There has been no emergency shelter for homeless families and the coalition has been the main point of entry for these clients,” said the Rev. Brian Scott, executive director of the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs.

“As a rule, we send them to a motel and pay for about seven days. These families can only stay for a week to 10 days and have no organized assistance to help them find employment or housing. This project will benefit the community by providing access and training for employment and connecting clients with housing. Families will include both single parent and two parent households with children up to 17 years of age,” Scott said.

United Way of Frederick County granted more than $2,000 to help get this shelter started.

United Way of Frederick County is a community change organization. It works across the county to leverage resources, businesses, experts, and other service providers to advance the common good, preparing young people to work, helping families become economically self-sufficient and helping individuals choose healthy lifestyles.
