The Ausherman Family Foundation is seeking proposals from artists to add a temporary mural at 69 S. Market St. in downtown Frederick.
The building housed a Subway, which recently closed, and is steps away from Carroll Creek.
The foundation wants to see a “vibrant mural that welcomes visitors and tourists to Downtown Frederick,” a news release stated.
The mural would cover the building’s storefront windows, according to Leigh Adams, executive director of the foundation. She added that the duration of the display is at the building owner’s discretion.
“We’re totally in support of public art,” she said. “We’ve been working with the [Frederick] Arts Council to do a public arts master plan, and this is just a very small, temporary installation.”
She said the foundation has loose guidelines for the mural but “it can also be up to the artist’s interpretation and what they would like to do.”
Proposals are due by 5 p.m. March 22 and should be emailed to gro.namrehsua@smadal. Proposals should include a project budget, time frame and a portfolio of their work. The artist or artists will be selected by mid-April, and the foundation hopes to have a mural completed by summertime.
This is just another way multiple organizations are putting forth efforts to beautify downtown with murals and other artwork throughout the city of Frederick.
“We’re certainly excited for them to take advantage of a temporary available space and fill it with artwork,” said Kara Norman, executive director of the Downtown Frederick Partnership. “It sounds like a fun and exciting way to add to the downtown streetscape.”
