Manuel “Manny” Casiano was born in New York City of two Puerto Rican parents. He moved with his family to Puerto Rico in 1970 and attended high school there, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife. Manny studied biological engineering at MIT in Boston, medicine at New York University in Manhattan, and finished a residency in general surgery at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, before moving to Frederick in 1987.
Manny practiced general surgery in a thriving private practice group (Foris Surgical Group) for 23 years in Frederick. During his clinical career, he was elected Chief of the FMH medical staff, and served on the Frederick Health board for six years. One of his joys living in Frederick is constantly seeing people who were his patients who he was able to help over the years. He was the managing partner of the group for many years, and the desire to do an optimal job in that role inspired him to complete an MBA at Hood College in 2004.
In 2007, Manny transitioned to an administrative role at Frederick Health, becoming the Chief Medical Officer and Sr VP for Population Health for the Medical System. During his decade and a half in that role, he significantly enlarged the Hospital-employed medical group to meet the clinical needs of Frederick patients. He helped lead the hospital to its current status as a Top 100 Hospital in the United States per HealthGrades and was ever focused on optimal clinical outcomes for patients. He retired in 2021, after a year of managing the Covid pandemic in our community.
Manny currently serves on several local and national non-profit boards, promoting community services for immigrant populations, safety efforts in aviation, and insurance coverage for practicing physicians. He and his wife are empty nesters, living in Frederick City, trying their best to spoil their 2-year-old granddaughter long distance.
Manny is now sharing his passion for civic engagement by participating in the Ausherman Family Foundation’s Multi-Year Grants Committee. We are thrilled to have him as a part of our organization and leverage his immense knowledge.
