Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) was recently awarded a $5,000 General Grant to support its efforts in providing food for food banks in Frederick. This money allows FHFH to process 66 deer that were donated by Frederick County residents. Once this meat is processed, FHFH will provide 10,560 servings of meat to various foods banks and feeding ministries in Frederick.
Coupled with this effort was a donation by Ausherman Family Foundation Trustee, Jeremy Holder, who purchased a pig from the Great Frederick Fair. The pig will be processed and donated to food banks, and the proceeds of all livestock this year went directly back to the kids who raised the animals.
As FHFH notes, protein and meat products are one of the hardest items to get at food banks. The expensive price of meat and its limited shelf life are what prevents it from being a readily accessible food item by food banks. Those who rely on food banks often lack the proper amount of protein in their diets. These donations, however, will mitigate this problem and provide much needed nutrition.
