AARCH Society Breaks Ground on African American Heritage Center: A Dream Turning Into Reality

On March 18th, more than 100 community members gathered under blue skies and hopeful hearts to witness a powerful moment in Frederick County’s history—the groundbreaking ceremony for the African American Resources Cultural and Heritage (AARCH) Society’s long-awaited Heritage Center. What was once the dream of the late David Key is now breaking ground—literally and figuratively—thanks to the unwavering dedication of the community, the AARCH Board, and countless champions of local Black history.

The ceremony was a deeply moving celebration of progress and purpose. Political leaders including Congresswoman April McClain Delaney, County Executive Jessica Fitzwater, Mayor Michael O’Connor, and Madelyn Wilson from the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce presented proclamations in honor of the milestone. Their presence, along with that of the many AARCH Board members in attendance, reflected a shared commitment to honoring the past and building a more inclusive future.

The event was bookended with heartfelt prayers led by City Council Member Derek Shackelford, grounding the day in faith and unity. Stirring speeches by Gayon Sampson, Shackelford himself, and AARCH Board President Dr. Olivia White reminded everyone that this center is more than just a building—it is a beacon of truth, resilience, and pride. Dr. White, radiant with joy, said she was on “cloud nine” from the overwhelming support. The message was clear: Black history is our history, and this center will be a space where that truth is preserved, celebrated, and shared.

The ceremony culminated in a symbolic and powerful moment—elected officials, AARCH Board members, and donors joined together to put shovels into the earth, officially marking the beginning of a long-awaited chapter. The Heritage Center is expected to complete its fit-out later this summer, with displays and exhibits anticipated to open next year.

As the dust settled and the echoes of applause lingered, it was clear this was more than a groundbreaking. It was a testament to community, to perseverance, and to the enduring power of telling the full story of Frederick County—one that now, more than ever, includes the voices and legacy of its African American citizens.

The Ausherman Family Foundation has been proud to support AARCH Society through various grants including Single-Year Grants, an IDEA Grant which allowed the organization to digitize their records, and a Community Benefit Project Grant which has helped to catalyze the building of this museum.
