Jim has worked on an extended basis with over one hundred non-profit clients. During that time his clients have achieved over $325 million in fundraising goals. Jim has spoken at numerous professional meetings with an emphasis on board recruitment, motivation and strategic planning. He also brings to his clients many years of financial and organizational management experience. He is a member of the Association of Health Care Philanthropy and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Jim is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado.

Catrese Brown has worked with TransitionGuides since the firm’s inception. She leads executive transition and search projects, and provides related organizational planning and post-hire services. With over 30 years in the nonprofit sector, her diverse experience includes human resource development, organization development, facilitating board and staff meetings and strategic planning. She presents locally and nationally on Executive Transition Management and Succession Planning. She has also served as an interim executive.
She holds a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Development from Towson State University, and is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) through the International Coach Federation. Director of Public Affairs for the Maryland Insurance Administration, Laxton also teaches undergraduate courses in Hood College’s Communication Arts program. Previously, she created an Office of Public Information for Carroll County Government, led the PR efforts of the Frederick County Commission for Women, and ran her own communications firm. She also helped to teach courses for George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management.

Russ Hodge is an Emmy Award-winning producer with over 25 years of experience in news, public affairs and documentary production and programming. Mr. Hodge recently returned to 3 Roads after serving as the first Director of Television for the Voice of America. At the VOA he oversaw the creation and production of more than one hundred hours of original video programming per week in 45 languages. The largest U.S international broadcaster with an overall audience of an estimated 134 million, Mr. Hodge managed 18 bureaus around the world, and a multimillion dollar budget. During his tenure, Mr. Hodge developed an economic and business reporting unit, a creative programming unit for African and Asian countries and implemented the Persian language broadcasting program.

Recently retired, Betsy Nelson served as the President of the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers (ABAG) from 1990 through 2012. During her tenure, she led ABAG to a leadership role in the region and within the Regional Association of Grantmakers movement nationwide. Her expertise includes facilitating partnerships and collaboration, and enhancing family dynamics through philanthropy.
Betsy serves on the boards of the Baltimore Equitable Insurance Foundation and the Herbert Bearman Foundation Advisory Board. She chairs the Governance Board of the Baltimore Integration Partnership, a three year effort funded by the national Living Cities. From 2001 to 2012, Betsy wrote a bi-weekly column, Adventures in Philanthropy, for the Daily Record.

Dr. Gregory Powell is a clinical and organizational psychologist. Twenty-five years ago, he founded and continues to work as a psychotherapist with the Frederick Psychology Center. Fifteen years ago, he founded Powell Management Resources where he continues to work with businesses and NPO’s on issues related to “people and planning”, especially in regard to making effective changes. Greg’s specialties as a consultant include executive coaching, team development, conflict resolution, strategic planning, board governance, and organizational assessment and change.

Principal of Miles & Stockbridge
Tom Lynch, who has been a partner and a principal of Miles & Stockbridge for more than twenty years, serves as a former chair and current member of the Miles & Stockbridge Environmental group, the Board of Directors of the Frederick County YMCA and the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the board of a number of other non-profit organizations as well, and has devoted countless hours on various task forces for Frederick County and the City of Frederick.
Tom has participated as a member of the Maryland State Bar Ethics Committee since 1989 and chaired the Committee from 1999-2000. As a result of this experience, Tom was selected to participate on a committee that rewrote the Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct in 2003. He was later selected to serve as Frederick County’s representative for both the Professionalism Task Force as well as the Professionalism Commission, where he chaired the Professionalism Subcommittee. Tom was also involved with the Maryland Bar Association, and served as President of the Frederick County Bar Association in 2000. He was responsible for the creation of the Committee for Frederick County, which he chaired from 1998 until 2003, and again in 2005. He also served as the Vice Chair and then Chair of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee for Frederick County. In addition to this wide spectrum of experience, Tom works to develop instructional programs for the Maryland mediation training program for lawyers in Frederick County.
Tom has been dedicated to Frederick County and the State of Maryland his entire career, serving the community in a wide variety of ways for nearly thirty five years.

Director of Public Policy at Maryland Nonprofits
Henry Bogdan joined Maryland Nonprofits as Director of Public Policy in 1997, after a twenty-year career in policy analysis, advocacy and government relations for the City of Baltimore. As Director of the Mayor’s Task Force for Liaison with the General Assembly for 12 years, he served as an adviser on state legislative and fiscal issues and as the Mayor’s principal lobbyist in Annapolis.
Henry is responsible for Maryland Nonprofits’ public policy program, including: formulating the Association’s policy priorities and lobbying in Annapolis on behalf of the nonprofit sector; providing technical assistance and training on policy advocacy and nonprofit legal and governance questions. He has coordinated Maryland Nonprofit’s Advocacy Leaders Program since its development in 2000.

Dr. Kolmerten, a founding partner of Charitable Development Consulting, is a tenured full professor of English at Hood College, where she has taught for 34 years. She has also served as Assistant to the Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of the Honors Program, Academic Grants Writer, and Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving.
As the Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at Hood from 1999-2002, Dr. Kolmerten designed the structure for all major gifts activities. One of her most important responsibilities was to work with major donors to increase their giving by helping them design innovative gifts. Dr. Kolmerten also has directed a number of campaigns including campaigns to match federal grants (NEH, NSF) and campaigns to renovate historic buildings.

Vice President Development, Baltimore Community Foundation
Ralph Serpe is Vice-President of Development at the Baltimore Community Foundation. Ralph oversees the Foundation’s development, philanthropic services and communications. In 2012, BCF began a 3 year $100 million discretionary campaign toward a larger goal of $1 billion for Baltimore by 2050.
Prior to joining BCF, Ralph was Executive Vice President of the Princeton Area Community Foundation, and directed professional advisor outreach for Community Foundation Silicon Valley.
Ralph founded the Unrestricted Asset Development Peer Group, a five-year peer learning and asset building discussion. Now in its seventh year, the Group now includes 75 US and Canadian community foundations.

Former President & CEO of Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations
Darryl A. Jones, Sr. is a nationally recognized speaker, trainer, and facilitator with more than 30 years of experience in nonprofit leadership. Mr. Jones is a retired police officer, and has since held senior level positions in nonprofit organizations. His leadership experience ranges from start-ups to national nonprofits, with annual budgets ranging from $200,000 to $40 million. During his police career, he worked in Patrol, was an Academy Instructor, a member of the SWAT team, and President of the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police. He has been a trainer and lead facilitator for the Department of Justice and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Mr. Jones is a Kellogg Fellow, and was the first police officer ever selected to participate in the prestigious three year leadership development program. He is also a Weinberg Fellow, a graduate of Leadership Maryland, and a graduate and former Board member of Leadership Greater Washington. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, in Newsweek, rang the closing bell for NASDAQ, and has conducted innumerable radio and television interviews on issues including public safety, leadership, cultural diversity and organizational excellence.
