Frederick Alliance for Youth
In its second year of partnership with the Foundation, The Frederick Alliance for Youth established a pilot program serving 26 of the neediest students of Hillcrest Elementary School. The relationship with Hillcrest Elementary's administration has been firmly established, and community partnerships have been developed to bring everything from piano lessons to internet safety programs to the children. Daily programming has been crafted with professional skill which has engaged not only the children but their families as well, resulting in an after school program that is so much more than childcare.
At the beginning of the program's initial year, parents would pick up their children and run out the door quickly. Relationships have been built that allow parents to establish networks with each other and with Alliance staff. Alliance staff continues to actively build such trusting relationships with the families, thus creating a safe space where children and their families can get to know one another.
The program director meets with staff weekly to analyze the individual needs of each child; homework and enrichment activities are tailored to support youth academically and emotionally. Intensive family mentors conduct home visits, connect families to social services, and facilitate family to school connections.
Next steps involve seeking additional funds to replicate this successful program to serve more children in the Hillcrest and Waverly neighborhoods. The Foundation is actively seeking partnerships with philanthropic institutions and individuals in order to support this program expansion.

Frederick Alliance for Youth
The Frederick Alliance for Youth is a major Ausherman Family Foundation initiative to address the needs of children and young teens in the western area of the City of Frederick. Issues that have been identified as affecting the children and families of that area are:
- Unsupervised youth
- Difficulties experienced by non-English speaking families
- Lack of transportation
- An increase in gang activity
- Parents who need education and basic skills
- Lack of child care for pre-school aged children and difficult youth
The targeted outcomes for the Alliance are increased educational advancement, both in school class work and technology competency, and to increase each youth’s developmental assets. Parental involvement and positive relationships with adults will be a by-product of the supervised programs underway at the Hillcrest Community Center.

ThorpeWood Season of Growth Program
The Ausherman Family Foundation has provided a second year of support for this program located at ThorpeWood in Thurmont, Maryland. The program fosters hope and change in the lives of adolescent girls involved in the juvenile justice system by providing relationship-centered therapy. Life skills are taught and trust relationships are built that hopefully is the incentive for the girls to continue to undergo needed change.
